Last day of school, Portuguese style

image

Well I spent my morning under the strong rays of the Portuguese sun watching my niece and about 250 other kids enjoy the festival, yes festival, their school threw to celebrate the end of the school year.  Why do I have a feeling I will be getting a lot of shit or be made fun of after this post. Oh well, fuck it. I had a good time.

Yes, you all read that correctly. I was up in the morning. I was around a lot of children. I was in the sun. And I actually enjoyed myself. I guess once you get over the shock of this you can continue to read.

I decided to write about this because I needed to show my American friends and family that read this what the school system over here is doing for their kids. Now I know I have been out of school a very long time but I do not recall having a Festival on the last day of school. I mean you would think the Minister of Education was a fan of Grease and decided they would go in same direction of Rydell High but on a smaller scale for children. And if this kind of thing is going on in the states now, I guess I really missed out!

So from what I gather the elementary school my niece goes to, with the help of local businesses set up this Festival at the local park to celebrate the end of the year. They have all of these fun outdoor activities for the kids to participate in like those inflatable castles that you can jump up and down on, they had this crazy bunjee type swing that looked like TONS of fun, the gym teacher was teaching dance moves up on a huge stage, a place for kids to place “dress up”, plus other fun child orientated games. I have to say I was pretty damn impressed.  It started at 9am but we got there about 10.30. Then at about 1.00 a huge lunch was given out to all of the classes. Each class made a blanket out of paper that they colored and used it to set their plates and food on. And the food was good too. I had a bifana which is super popular here. It’s a marinated piece of pork that is grilled and put on a roll. When marinated properly, they kick ass. They also had grilled chicken, fruit, snacks, and all sorts of juices for the kids to drink. Pretty damn impressive!

But there was a price to pay for all of this fun in the sun. I was smart enough to wear a hat but I forgot the suntan lotion. I am now all red! :(  Hopefully it will turn brown and I’ll be on the way to having a great summer tan!

I have to say I had a great time following my niece around all morning, taking pictures of her having a great time!
